Hackers attempt Crypto Scam with India’s PM Twitter account

Crypto scam-seeking cyberpunks breached the verified Twitter account of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with over 73 million followers, using the platform to announce fake news about the country’s mainstream crypto adoption.

“India has officially adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially bought 500 BTC and is distributing them to all residents of the country. The future has come today!” The scammers tweeted.

A registration link was also attached to the tweet for investors to sign up and claim their share of the false largesse.

Officials have since reported the issue to Twitter who helped to recover the account.

The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured.

In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored.

During an online meeting convened by US President Joe Biden, Modi said crypto and other related technologies must be used to enable democracy and not undermine it.

“By working together, democracies can meet the aspirations of our citizens and celebrate the democratic spirit of humanity.”
